A recent article makes claims that foods that cure sleep disorders is real – 20 different foods to be exact.

Now, come on. Doesn’t this sound like those too good to be true stories!

And here is the surprise…turkey is not one of those 20 foods that cure sleep disorders. How can that be?

We’ve been taught since we were children that turkey is loaded with tryptophan.

Tryptophan’s proper scientific name is L-tryptophan in the chemistry world and is an essential amino acid. The problem we human’s have is that our body can not make it. To compensate we must supply tryptophan through our diet. And, yes it is true, turkey is a food rich in tryptophan. It is also found in other poultry, meat and fish products in addition to yogurt, cheese and eggs.The article’s author is a health nut so meats are considered ‘bad’ and thus their top 20 foods that cure sleep disorders do not include any protein and it’s accompanying L-tryptophan from animal-based foods. That’s too bad. A fresh turkey sandwich in the evening has led many a person to snooze quite peacefully throughout history.

Okay, a bit harsh with that last comment. But, there is no earth-shattering news here. Eat sensible and avoid sugars before bedtime.

What about the stress of the day, week, month or year from home, family, kids and work that bombard people who end up suffering from sleep disorders?

Do these foods ‘cure’ those factors that more often cause the disorders of sleep that most people experience?

The answer….possibly yes but most likely no. Although, chocolate has been proven to provide temporary relief to  many, many problems.

You do want to practice moderation when hoping your sleep disorder will be cured by food. Too much of the foods on this list can lead to weight gain. And, weight gain has been directly linked to a serious sleep disorder known as obstructive sleep disorder.  You just can’t win!
